Whether you are a new car driver in the motorized world or an experienced one, we all legally need to carry driver car insurance. Of course, not everyone does this but the penalties for electing not to do so have gotten much more stringent over the years and can even include jail time. There are some basic principles of car insurance that everyone should understand and can benefit from knowing.
There are certain categories of insurance that are fairly standard–the main requirement in most states is liability insurance. This type of policy ensures that the insurance company will pay for damages to property and bodily injury to another party, if you are at fault. Collision insurance is liability plus repairs to your own vehicle in case of an accident that is your fault. Comprehensive covers damage to one’s car not through an accident–theft, vandalism, weather damage, etc. There are other types of insurance such as uninsured motorist, supplemental, and broader types of insurance but these three form the bases of most policies.
Actuaries make their living figuring out the risks and probabilities of accidents based upon gender, age, geography, etc. There are some simple things to consider when looking at car insurance. First, females tend to receive lower rates than males because they have less accidents. More importantly than that are the risk factors of age–younger and newer drivers pay more in insurance because they have a higher propensity to have cause for an insurance claim. Additionally, if one lives in certain metro areas this can elevate rates based upon traffic flow, theft, and other variables.
What can one to do offset some of these numbers? Well, the more one ages without mishap will certainly improve the rate one is paying. Also, certain safety features can lower premiums as well as taking driving courses (mostly for younger drivers). If one is in high school, grades can make a difference as well since the correlation between B and A students to accidents is much less than those with lower grades.
Consider all of these factors when searching for a driver car insurance vendor. Of course, solid price comparison and asking many questions will also go a long way in keeping one’s rates down. However, the best bet is just to be a careful driver!
